Brazil: Man begs to be arrested

A 48-year-old man in the city of Botucatu in Sao Paulo state called emergency services early Monday morning and begged them to come arrest him, according to a report in the newspaper O Globo. O Globo quotes the call, where Lauro Borges Pereira says he’s “desperate to get arrested.” Pereira said he wanted to be with his son, who had recently been picked up on robbery charges. Pereira had a criminal record, but had not committed a crime, so the police said they couldn’t help. At that point, Pereira drove into the city and rammed into a police car parked at a gas station. And at the precinct, O Globo says he then verbally abused the police officers until they did what he wanted, which was place him under arrest. He was jailed on charges of contempt, drunk driving, and damage to public property. It’s not yet clear whether he’ll share a cell with his son.
